In joining forces with King’s Casino, Partypoker has become the second international poker site to go live in the Czech Republic since its laws changed in 2017. Prior to the regulatory changes, the country had relied on the 1990 Lotteries Act to manage the online poker sector.
However, when Andrej Babiš took up the position of Czech Finance Minister in 2014, his anti-online gaming stance ushered in a new wave of regulation. In a bid to deter operators from serving locals, Babiš introduced high tax rates designed to make certain games a costly investment for operators.
With costs spiraling, Partypoker left the market. But within two years, Czech President Miloš Zeman changed the laws once again, making it easier for foreign companies to reenter the market.
