#BoatToTheBeach

Our initiative #BoatToTheBeach, has its origins in the historical identity of our town. Colonial Beach, a water-front municipality in Westmoreland County, Virginia was settled in 1650 by the great-great grandfather of President James Monroe. For years, water-men were the primary occupants of Colonial Beach and many industries revolved around boating and the bounty of the Potomac River. We had a heyday in the early to mid-20th century when this second-largest Virginia beachfront became the “Playground on the Potomac”. Colonial Beach was a popular “bathing” and fishing resort and prior to bridge construction and automobile travel, most visitors arrived by paddle-wheel steamboats such as “The St. John’s” from parts of Maryland and Washington DC.

Gambling

Today, Colonial Beach is reinventing and reinvigorating our boating and water-town heritage. We pay homage to our fore-bearers who worked and played so well.

Throughout town you will see murals hearkening back to a time when paddle-wheel steamboats were our primary mode of transportation to the “Playground on the Potomac”. Colonial Beach has private and public docks on both the Potomac River and Monroe Bay and there is a plethora of activities for you when you get here.
